Elderly Woman Reading Bible Stabbed in Head

Police in Anaheim have arrested an alleged gang member they say stabbed an elderly woman in the head as she sat outside her home reading the Bible.
18-year-old Alfredo Gonzalez was arrested Sunday after a relative told police he was hiding in the restroom of a fast food restaurant, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

He now faces attempted murder charges, Martinez said.

At around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, officers found 70-year-old Mary Margaret Fuentes, sitting on her porch in the 2500 block of West Gramercy Avenue with several stab wounds on her head and ears, Anaheim Police Department officials said.

Fuentes told officers that Gonzalez, who is her neighbor, attacked her, though she didn't know why, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

Fuentes was taken to the UCI Medical Center, and her injuries are considered non life-threatening.

"She just came outside reading her Bible, I don't know what exactly happened, the victim's daughter Yvonne Puentes told KTLA.

Gonzalez's family cooperated with the police investigation "100 percent" officers said, and gave investigators permission to search their home.

Officers questioned Gonzalez' brother, who is believed to have driven him away after the alleged attack. He is not facing any charges related to the incident.

A motive for the attack was not known, according to Martinez.
